i have been injured numerous times throwing a crab pot overboard. here are some helpful tips to safe crabbing. i highly recommend keeping a first aid kit on board. i can't count the number of time i have received a moderate rope burn or slight ankle cut as a result of dodging a crab rope unwinding. before you throw the crab pot, make sure eveyone on the boat is ready including hand a feet ample distance from the crab pot rope. lastly, make sure the boat motor is in idle as to prevent the crab rope from getting tangle in an outboard motor on the open water. from personal experience, untangling this type of mess is frustrating and could end up in several hours of wasted time. again, keep a nice pair of form fitting gloves on board just in case!
