Hermit Crab Care Lesson 4 - the Perfect Hermit Crab Environment
Author: John Brody
In the last several lessons I revealed some valuable information about hermit crabs anatomy and behavior that can help you be a more effective and knowledgeable "parent."
Today, I want to help you understand why a temperature-controlled environment is crucial to the longevity and health of your crab. Your new mini-colony of crabs has a rich and interesting history. Their ancestors are native to the tropics. Inherent in their needs are warmth and humidity. It's essential for their good health.
Many individuals buy a hermit crab

based on the pleadings of a child. And far too many of these know little about what it takes to raise one. If you're already tried your hand at this, placed this little tyke in a cage and then set it down just anywhere, then you might not have had your friend for very long. Instead of placing hermit crabs in a cage, you should buy a glass aquarium. In addition, you should buy a heater and a hygrometer (which regulates humidity) in order to simulate the tropical conditions of your crabs' original, native environment.
But that's not all. You can go one step further by placing various decorations that would make it look like the tropics as well. You'll discover a variety of items at your local pet store.
One more thing you should know about your mini-colony of hermit crabs: They like to wander and climb. So be sure to add some driftwood or other decorations they can sink their "claws" into and climb.
In our next lesson we will learn all about hermit crab molting.
