Hermit Crab Care Lesson 3 - Cheaper by the Dozen
Author: John Brody
Ah! Still considering adopting a hermit crab? We will now discuss a common mistake many first time hermit crab parents make - adopting only one or at most two crabs. Imagine this scene, you're walking along a beach at night. Suddenly you encounter countless snail shells, all moving about seemingly aimlessly. Before you think that a strange race of aliens have landed from a different galaxy, let's consider a slightly more likely explanation: A colony of hermit crabs.
Indeed, the cousin of the crab you're considering adopting is a social animal. He

loves the company of other crabs so much that they actually live in colonies in the wild that include literally hundreds of these crustaceans. And knowing this can help you as a hermit crab parent. If you're thinking about adopting a hermit crab, stop right there. Don't adopt just one. Don't even stop at two. The minimum you should bring into your house to ensure that your new friends don't get lonely is three. In fact, it's not unusual for people to purchase up to nine crabs at a time.
This advice gives new meaning to the older adage: The more the merrier. Once you get past the expense of the tank and the necessary accessories for that, the actual cost of hermit crabs is relatively small. Especially once you discover how wonderfully interactive they are with each other.
So if you truly want to be great parent to a hermit crab, don't limit yourself to adopting just one or two. Recreate, as best you can, a natural habitat for them - a colony. You'll be amazed at how healthy and happy these little creatures will be!
