Author: D Swain
Hermit crabs are omnivorous creatures which means they'll eat virtually anything they come across in the wild. If you own one, there are a few things you need to know about feeding him. This article will give you a few tips for feeding a hermit crab.
Commercial
The main food for hermit crabs should be commercially prepared food. It is available in either pelleted or canned form. If you have a relatively small crab, you should crush the pellets to make it easier for them to consume. Just make sure that whatever commercial food you feed is well-balanced.

Fruits
In addition to feeding your crab this commercial food, you can also feed him regular fruits that you would eat. They enjoy bananas, strawberries, apples, and grapes. If you want to give him a tropical treat, you can feed him papayas and mangos. Just make sure that you take the pits out of whatever fruits you feed him.
Vegetables
It's also important to serve vegetables when feeding a hermit crab. Carrots and corn are very good because they are rich with carotene. Other vegetables that you can feed include leafy lettuce, spinach, and broccoli.
Water
It should go without saying that your crab will need water. It's best to provide him with two shallow water dishes. One will hold salt water, while the other will hold fresh water. Although some land hermits won't drink salt water, some will. They also like to bathe themselves in salt water. If you get fresh water from your tap, then it's important that you dechlorinate it before you give it to your crab.
